Worship Director — Part Time
Tapestry Church | Oakland, CA | ~20 hours/week
About Tapestry Church
Tapestry Church is a multicultural congregation in Oakland committed to being a people of many cultures woven together into the fabric of Oakland to display the beauty of God’s story. Our worship reflects that vision — multicultural, genre-spanning, and rooted in genuine encounter with God. We're looking for a Worship Director who loves that challenge and wants to help build something meaningful.
Position Overview
The Worship Director leads Tapestry's Sunday worship and builds the volunteer team that makes it happen. This is a part-time role (~20 hours/week) reporting directly to the Lead Pastor. The right candidate brings strong musical instincts, confident rehearsal leadership, and the relational warmth to develop a healthy, committed worship team. Administrative competence is just as important as musical gifting. We need someone who brings order, not just inspiration.
Core Responsibilities
Sunday Worship Leadership
Present and leading from 8am–1pm each Sunday (~5 hours including setup rehearsal and tear down)
Lead the congregation in engaging, thoughtful worship that helps people experience and glorify God
Coordinate service flow in collaboration with the pastoral team
Music Direction & Planning
Select songs 2–3 weeks in advance in coordination with the sermon series and Christian calendar
Determine song keys, arrangements, and instrumentation for each service
Lead weekly rehearsals (may be on Sunday mornings) with clear direction on dynamics, builds, and team execution
Create chord charts and lyric sheets as needed
Technical & Administrative (~3 hours/week)
Manage Planning Center for team scheduling and order of service.
Build and maintain all ProPresenter slide decks (excluding sermon slides)
Manage Overflow tab and ensure technical readiness each Sunday
Upload chord charts, lyric sheets, reference audio, and service orders into Planning Center
Manage and occasionally order or troubleshoot equipment related to worship.
Team Development
Recruit, invest in, and schedule a team of volunteer musicians and vocalists
Spend intentional time with team members — individually and in groups — to build trust and culture
Develop worship team health through regular connection, occasional retreats or jam sessions, and a culture of growth
What We're Looking For
Musical Skills
Proficiency on at least one instrument (guitar or keys preferred) with strong vocal ability
Music director instincts: able to lead a room, shape a sound, and communicate clearly to musicians
Comfort across multiple genres — this matters deeply in a multiracial, multicultural church
Working knowledge of ProPresenter and basic live sound/tech setup
Personal Qualities
Confident and secure — you know who you are and don't need the room's approval to lead it
Humble and coachable — open to direction and honest feedback, genuinely hungry to grow
Relationally magnetic — people naturally want to follow you, work with you, and spend time with you
Organizationally wired — you find satisfaction in building systems and teams, not just moments or individuals.
Willing to engage conflict constructively — healthy teams are built, not assumed
Adventurous — open to trying new things musically and willing to take risks for the mission
Experience & Qualifications
3–5 years of experience leading worship in a church setting, with a track record of consistent Sunday leadership
Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, and grow a volunteer worship team — not just manage one
Experience directing rehearsals and giving musical feedback across skill levels, from beginners to seasoned musicians
Proven ability to lead across musical genres; experience in multicultural or multilingual worship contexts is a strong plus
Proficiency with Planning Center and ProPresenter, or comparable worship planning and presentation platforms
Experience working collaboratively with pastoral staff on service planning and sermon series integration
A history of investing relationally in team members. Someone who has built culture, not just filled slots
Why This Role
The Bay Area is one of the most influential places on earth…and one of the most spiritually hungry. Behind the wealth and innovation and cultural energy is a deep longing that no industry or ideology has been able to satisfy. The gospel is needed here. Badly. And the church that carries it needs to be as diverse as the city itself.
Tapestry exists because we believe multiracial, multicultural community isn't just a nice idea. Jesus said unity is our witness (cf. John 17). When people who wouldn't naturally belong together are woven into one body by the love of Christ, something happens that the world can't manufacture. That's what we're building in Oakland. And worship is at the center of it.
This role is an invitation to lead that charge musically. To choose songs that hold together across cultures and languages. To build a team that looks like the kingdom and sounds like it too. To stand in front of a room of people from every corner of the world and call them into the presence of God together. There aren't many jobs like that.
And you won't do it alone. Tapestry's staff culture is genuinely collaborative — pastors and directors who think together, plan together, and take the mission seriously without taking themselves too seriously. You'll have real input into the direction of the church, a team that invests in you, and leadership that actually wants to hear what you think.
The role is part-time by design. We want to make space for a whole person, not just a function. Whether you're a musician with a day job, a parent with school-age kids, or someone building a broader creative or ministry portfolio, this structure is meant to fit real life. What we're not flexible on is the mission. Come ready to give this your full heart, even if not your full week.
If you love Oakland, love the church, and believe worship can be one of the most powerful forces for unity in a divided country, we'd love to talk.
Compensation & Start Date
This is a part-time position at approximately 20 hours per week. Compensation ranges from $33-$39/hr commensurate with skills and experience.
We are hoping to have the new Worship Director in place by September, with potential for overlap and training with our current director for candidates available to begin in August.
